Et Sanguis Baronem (The Red Baron), 32 lightly-weighted chessmen without board, wood, red v. black, Russian, circa 1940 – 1950.
Height: King 9cm, weight 16g, base width 3cm, Queen 7.5cm, Bishop 6.5cm, Knight 5.6cm, Rook 4.2cm, Pawn 4.1cm. W: red felt bases B: black felt bases.
A sturdy and honest workingman’s set of chessmen, characterized by the Germanic bell-bottomed bases – adding the temptation of inserting a tiny clapper into the bell of the king to signal an opponent’s inevitable resignation! – a temptation overcome in regard to this set. Instead, a little weight has been added to complement the stout form of the pieces whilst leaving enough character of the original design so as they can be handled today as they would have been handled by the nimble fingers of several generations past.
All pieces are UV resistant and ideal for display as well as casual play.
Both kings carry the hand-painted signature of the artist on their felt bases.
