This elegantly turned wartime Soviet design pops up on the market only every so often, and when a set does surface collector’s tend to snap them up immediately, whatever their condition. Often they are incomplete, as was the case with this well used set which was missing two dark bishops and also both dark rooks. The two rooks, being of a simple, rustic design I turned and colour-matched myself, the bishops, being of a more delicate pattern – wielding massive intricate collars – were dispatched to the workshop of the master craftsman, Alan Dewey, who did an excellent job (as per usual!) of turning two new bishops based on the original design. They are not absolutely identical, a conscious decision, so as to blend in with the rest of the chess pieces that have individual characters all of their own, as you will discover after playing through a few games with this beautiful and historic set.
Both kings carry the hand painted iridescent silver ‘Power’ signature of the artist on their bases and are UV resistant making them ideal for display as well as casual play.
