A quaint and typical example of the Old Vienna Coffee House sets that dominated the smoke-laden gaming rooms of Austria, Germany and upper Italy from the late 1800s on. This set is unique in that the dark side wasn’t coated in the traditional black lead lacquer, but simply stained, unfortunately, not by a professional finisher it seems. A problem that has been remedied, as I have refinished the entire set to something very close to exactly how it would have looked in the Habsburg Empire of the early twentieth century – and it really is an exceptional ‘playing’ set from this era – don’t be afraid to drop these pieces on the floor!
There are a few minor ‘battle-scars’ here and there, a sprinkling of manly character, so to speak, as to be expected with a band of old warriors of this age. Four unsightly pawn collars have been restored (3 white, 1 black), which were not so attractive (I’ve lost track of which is which now). Weight has been added making them easier in the hand – the lightness of the Austrian sets was one of their greatest flaws I feel. Felt has also been added to the bases, too (another irksome absentee of the originals), which has been subtly antiqued to complete the overall sense of antiquity that you will feel when playing with these handsome specimens of Austrian cafe society of years gone by.
The pieces are UV resistant and ideal for display as well as casual play. Both kings carry the hand-painted iridescent silver ‘power’ signature of the artist on their bases and come with a Certificate of Authenticity (posted separately- see our main site below for details)
